Nicola Werner

After growing up in rural Kent and studying Fine Art at Central School in London, I trained as a potter with Alan Caiger-Smith at Aldermaston 1982-6. Since then I have made a living making majolica pottery & tiles in the Blackdown Hills between Taunton and Honiton.
The pots are thrown in Fremington clay from Brannams at Barnstaple on my Alsager wheel and twice fired in my large electric kilns.
I paint on the white tin glaze with a variety of on-glaze oxides, rather like watercolours, across a rainbow of colours but like the Impressionists, never use black.
Each piece is unique although I have developed repeated designs and patterns over the years so can produce dinner services and do wedding lists. I also make one-off commemorative pieces to order with inscriptions, from a small child’s mug to a golden wedding salad bowl.
I produce a wide range of tiles for kitchens and bathrooms –individual tiles or bespoke murals and help with interior design too.
All my work is inspired by the great European tradition of majolica, faience and delftware and is intended for use.
Please telephone or email to book a visit to the pottery.
